The ISTE Standards for Students helps to guide teachers in providing engaging experiences that will improve learning. The three concepts that I feel strongly about from the ISTE Standards-T include “Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity” standard 1B, “Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments” standard 2B, and “Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility” standard 4A.

Standard 1B from “Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity” promotes the engagement of students in the exploration of real world issues using digital tools and resources. In other words, students are able to use digital tools and resources for real world learning and authentic problem solving to give the content material meaning and purpose. An example from EDU 305 of a teacher modeling this standard was the video of gifted students looking up information about the stock market. Learning through the stock market integrates multiple subjects and it allows students to deal with real world issues. As a teacher, I would like to implement this standard in my classroom because I believe that students should always have assignments that have a purpose and the students should be aware of the purpose. This can be modeled through stock market activities or designing a house or club house with digital tools to create rooms based off of specific dimensions. Real world examples will also provide opportunities for students to connect to the material easier as well.

Standard 2B from “Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments” encourages teachers to develop a technological learning environment that supports students in creating their own goals and expectations. This standard requires students to take responsibility for themselves and their work. Students are able to take ownership for all of their work, expectations, and assessments. In EDU 358, Dr. Duncan allowed us to create our own learning contract and determine when our assignments were due as well as how we would demonstrate that we understood the learning objective. We were also required to build the guide or rubric for assessing our work. I enjoyed this model because I was able to be in charge of my own learning and I think that this could be helpful for my students as well. In my classroom I would like to incorporate assignments that required students to meet a specified learning goal. Students would be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the learning goal by creating a product of their choice with any digital learning tool available. The students would also be required to create an assessment tool for me to use to assess their product. This allows students to take responsibility for their work and manage their own learning which is essential for any global 21st century learner.

Standard 4A from “Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility” addresses the importance of safety with digital learning. It is very important for students to keep a safe presence online. As a teacher I will advocate to my students how important it is for online safety. Students will be using digital tools in and out of the classroom, so they must be knowledgeable of the legal and ethical uses of digital information. Students in my classroom will demonstrate an understanding of how to ethically use digital tools in the classroom before we use digital tools independently in the classroom. It is important for students to understand that they must give credit to all sources being used for their work. For example, when students in my class are creating a product and they find ideas for their product online, they must include the source of their ideas. It is also important that students know what information they should and should not provide to online resources. In my classroom students will use class accounts in order to protect their personal identity. When class accounts are not available, students will know that they are not allowed to give out their home information or phone number.

These concepts are very important to the classroom and to students. I believe that the concepts provide a positive impact on students of the global 21st century. As a computer science major, it is important that I use my knowledge of computers and knowledge of education to provide a digital classroom for my students to learn and grow. I have found numerous digital tools to use in the classroom through EDU 305. Our society is growing through technology and students should be exposed to this technology as much as possible. Throughout this course I have learned that technology should be used to enhance lessons and to enrich activities. Technology should not just be used to use it. There should always be a clear purpose for the use of digital tools in the classroom. Creating lesson ideas and using digital tools in this course has provided me numerous tools to use in my classroom as well as ideas for classroom lessons.
